Traverten, doğal minerallerden oluşan bir tortul kayaçtır. Su kaynaklarının bulunduğu alanlarda, suyun içerdiği minerallerin birikmesiyle oluşur. Traverten genellikle kalsiyum karbonat minerallerinden oluşur ve genellikle beyaz veya açık renklidir. Birçok traverten oluşumu, sıcak su kaynakları olan termal bölgelerde bulunur. Ayrıca bazalt ve diğer bazik lavların temas ettiği yerlerde de görülebilir. Traverten, dekoratif amaçlarla kullanılan bir yapı malzemesidir ve ayrıca termal sularda sağlık ve güzellik amaçlı kullanılan birçok tesisin yapımında da kullanılır.
